It all depends on what rules the apartments have. Some will have no pets policy, some may only allow birds. Or cats. Some have weight limits, some have breed restrictions.
When it is time for you to move in a few years you will just have to start researching your options in advance.
It depends on the building owner and what he decides. You would first have to find a pet friendly apartment, not all apartments are, in fact, most aren't pet friendly.
Some buildings have a weight maximum. My own building as a 30 pound maximum, however, those responsible owners who owned large breed dogs before the weight limited was enacted, are allowed to have another large breed. Some buildings ban certain breeds, like pitbulls, GSD, Dobermans & Rotties, but may allow labs, goldens and spaniels.
Attack dogs and Mastiffs to be sure. But even so, I would always check the specific terms of the apartment you are moving to. Also, keep in mind that they will sometimes say anything to get you as a renter who is locked into a 2-5 year contract. So don't go by what some commission-dependent representative says to you. Ask for a copy of the contract you would have to sign to live there. This is real.
We do not have a weight limit (and considering what we pay to live in such a nice apartment i'm glad) but we do have breed restrictions.
No Chow Chows, Dobermans, Rotties, or American Pit Bull Terriers or American Staffordshire terriers (they will make exceptions I hear but if a dog of any breed proves to be a nuisance you can be evicted if you don't remove the dog)
I don't think its right to ban the breeds but I know its for insurance purposes (people have them anyways here I think...I know of one neighbor who has a Shar Pei mix and I think has him down as a lab mix and Shar Peis aren't allowed either)
Here we have seen everything from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.....and this complex actually Allows huskies and German Shepards.....we have 2 huskies living in the complex and a Malamute
usually dogs that way over a certain weight. It could be weights 30 and down or even 15 and down. Some apartments don't allow any dogs at all and some rare apartments allow any kinds of dogs. I would suggest a Miniature dachshund they are small and cute, I really like red long haired ones but you need to teach them right away to not bark or that would be a problem with the apartment.
If there is not a weight restriction, the breed restriction usually have pitts, rotties, dobies, and unfortunately, boxers...basically the "fighting" breeds or the bully breeds. I've also seen German Shepards, Mastiffs and Great Danes, although that was purley itiotic, those are gentle giants.
Most often the apartment weight limit for pets is between 10-25lbs
i would suggest a smaller dog breed...bigges being a beagle..(20-30lbs)
smallest being a yorkie...i think they are the perfect apartment dog..but that is just me! good luck and reserch the dog breeds first!!!!!!
my apartment does not allow pit bull, american bull dogs, german shepherds or doberman pinschers. they also have a 40 lb weight limit. if you get a small or medium dog, mutt or terrier or something cute and fluffy, you should not have a problem.
